The Sandakan Track – Best Death March Tour in Borneo

Sandakan Track Mini-Highlights Trek

Sandakan Track Mini-Highlights Trek

(two days/one night. Minimum 2 people)

This tour, departing daily from Kota Kinabalu, provides a unique opportunity to walk a section of the Death March Track, between Nalapak and Muruk, and to visit several key POW sites. Please note that the duration of the walk is subject to weather and track conditions and the physical fitness of the participants.

Day 1: (L/D)

Depart from Kota Kinabalu at 7.30 am by motor vehicle for the Nalapak valley to begin the first part of the mini-trek, which passes through farm land and jungle. On reaching Nalapak village, a short but steep walk (optional) brings you to Sabah Tea Plantation and Quailey’s Hill, where there is a memorial in honour of Private Alan Quailey, who was murdered on the first death march when he could go no further. Morning walk is of two hours’ duration, easy to moderate grade.

After inspecting the memorial and lunching at the plantation, which affords a fine view of Mt Kinabalu, continue the trek, passing through rural land and small patches of jungle to Muruk – 2-3 hours duration, easy to moderate grade.

At the end of the trail near Muruk, transfer by road to Sabah Tea Plantation, where you can experience a taste of the ‘real’ Sabah with an overnight stay in a traditional-style Rungus Longhouse. Purpose built, but faithful to the original design, it has individual rooms, with fans and mosquito nets and a hand basin. Toilets and showers adjoin the sleeping area. Dinner is at the plantation restaurant.

NOTE: If you prefer to stay in a room with private facilities in a nearby cottage, this can be arranged for an extra $30 per person, twin share.

OPTIONS:

  1. In the afternoon, drive from Sabah Tea to the end of the jungle trail, and then follow the village road to Muruk (about 45 minutes flat walking, very easy grade)
  2. After lunch, substitute the afternoon walk with a visit to Poring Hot Springs, a popular recreational area.

Day 2: (B/L)

After breakfast, with ample time to admire the wonderful vista afforded by Mt Kinabalu, transfer by vehicle to Ranau Number 1 POW Camp, and then to The Last Camp, 8 kms south, where the final 183 survivors of the death marches died. From here, transfer to the beautiful Kundasang War Memorial and Gardens, on the side of Mt Kinabalu. After viewing a short documentary on the POW story and inspecting the various gardens, transfer by vehicle to Kota Kinabalu, with time to stop at a local craft market on the way.  Lunch is en route.

What to bring:
Comfortable walking shoes/boots,  loose and comfortable clothing, personal items, small day pack for trekking, shady hat, waterproof jacket, sun screen, insect repellent, camera and a 500 ml bottle of water, which is replenished as you need it by your guides.
